Whatever Happened To The Fawlty Towers Hotel ?
Fawlty Towers was never actually filmed in or even near Torquay.
The location of the building used for the outside shots was the Wooburn Grange Country Club in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire.
After a mysterious fire in 1991, developers quickly turned the site into 8 homes

In the episode 'The Kipper & The Corpse' an error in filming actually shows at the end when the laundry truck leaves Fawlty Towers, a large entry sign reads "Wooburn Grange Country Club" !
Although John Cleese got his initial inspiration for the madcap proprietor Basil when he stopped at the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay, he never wrote the show until years later.
After filming the backgrounds at the Exmouth View Hotel, a Torquay hotel now has a full claim to a connection with the Fawlty Towers series.
